Common Types of Dental Emergencies

Do you have a dental emergency on your hands?

While not all dental issues constitute an emergency, it is important to recognize when you’ll need to drop everything and visit our New York dental emergencyCity emergency dentist, Dr. David Dane, for immediate dental care. Don’t put off a true dental emergency, as this could lead to serious complications.

More about Dental Emergencies

Here are some of the most common dental emergencies:

  • A toothache
  • A gum abscess (a pimple-like growth that is a sign of an infection)
  • Broken or fractured tooth
  • Dislodged tooth
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Pain when biting
  • A broken dental restoration
  • A dental restoration that has fallen off

In most cases, dental emergencies often result in pain, swelling, and bleeding. If you are dealing with any of these symptoms then it’s a good idea to call our New York City urgent care dentist to find out whether you should come in right away for treatment.

If you are dealing with pain, you can choose to take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen or apply a cold compress to your face to ease discomfort until you can come into our office. Icing the area can also help reduce swelling.

If you are dealing with a knocked-out tooth, it’s important to rinse the tooth with warm water to remove any debris. Handle the tooth by the crown only and try to place it back into the socket. If it won’t go back in, place it in a closed container of milk and immediately come into our office. A knocked-out tooth can often be reattached if the problem is treated within one hour of the incident.

If a filling or crown is broken or falls out you should also come into our office right away. A restoration falling off can lead to pain and extreme tooth sensitivity, especially if the roots of the tooth are exposed. If the dental restoration is intact then we can just cement it back on the tooth; however, if the crown or filling is cracked or broken then we will need to replace it with a new restoration.
