Don't Ignore a Toothache

Severe toothaches are a result of many issues. The problem may be simple, like a loose dental filling, or a more severe issue, like a broken tooth. If you are dealing with a lingering toothache, ask our Midtown East, Manhattan, NY, dentist, Dr. David Dane for help. Dr. Dane is standing by to help you and your smile when you have a dental emergency.

Other reasons for toothaches are broken, fractured, or displaced teeth. You don't need to be too worried as long you act quickly and properly.

If you have a knocked-out tooth, the first thing to do is rinse your mouth to get rid of any blood or other debris. Then place a cold cloth on the cheek near the injury to keep swelling down. Place the tooth back in its socket as soon as possible then go to your Midtown East, Manhattan emergency dentist. If you can't place it in its socket, place it in a container of warm milk, saline or your own saliva until you reach your dentist's office.

If you have a fractured tooth, rinse with warm water and apply a cold pack to reduce swelling. Ibuprofen may also help keep down swelling. Minor fractures are sanded down but severe fractures, if not dealt with immediately, may need more serious procedures like a root canal if the inner pulp of the tooth is infected.

Simple toothaches are relieved by simple techniques, like rinsing to eliminate a dislodged piece of debris between teeth, and, of course, visiting your dentist if the toothache persists despite self-care.

You can do a lot to prevent a dental emergency related to trauma by wearing a mouthguard if you play sports. Remember to visit your dentist regularly for routine dental exams including x-rays. Your dentist can diagnose and treat dental issues while they are small, instead of waiting until you have painful tooth decay or another more serious dental problem.
