What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

If you experience sudden pain or hear an awful snapping sound as you chew, you have a pressing dental problem. Here at Emergency Dental Center in New York City, Dr. David Dane and his team solve a variety of problems involving pain, bleeding, loss of tooth structure, and more.

In any emergency situation...

You must act quickly. Your oral health and personal appearance depend on it. At our practice in Manhattan, New York City, your emergency dentist provides the first aid advice and same-day treatment needed to stabilize your symptoms, make you comfortable, and save your smile.

Dr. Dane and his staff want all their patients to get the routine care they need. This investment helps avoid many emergency situations. However, life also hands us the unexpected. So when you call the office for help, you'll get it fast.

Dental emergencies and what to do

  • Toothache: Whether it's extreme tooth sensitivity or just classic throbbing pain, call the office right away for an appointment. In the meantime, ibuprofen or acetaminophen helps ease discomfort, as does a warm compress on the jaw.
  • Broken or avulsed tooth: Save the pieces in a sealed container, cover it with milk or water, and take it with you to Emergency Dental Center. Dr. Dane may use composite resin to seamlessly repair the tooth, or if the tooth is knocked out completely, replant it into the empty socket.
  • Lacerations: Using a 4x4 or clean cloth, apply direct pressure to the cut. If bleeding does not resolve in 15 minutes, go to the hospital ER or urgent care center.
  • Lost filling or crown: Save the fragments and bring them to Dr. Dane. Likely he will remake the entire filling, but a crown may be repaired with new cement.

Avoiding emergencies

The American Dental Association (ADA) says you should avoid chewing hard foods, such as popcorn kernels or ice, never use your teeth to open packages or bottles, and wear an athletic mouth guard for all sports. Additionally, see Dr. Dane for cleanings and check-ups every six months to ward off problems or detect them before they spiral out of control.
